Every so often, headlines announce that Portugal's Golden Visa is "ending". It is one of the most searched questions about the programme — and one of the most misunderstood. The short answer: the programme changed; it did not disappear.
What actually changed
The 2023 "Mais Habitação" reform removed real estate (and certain capital-transfer options) from the eligible routes, as part of a wider housing policy. That was a significant change — and the source of much of the "it's ending" narrative — but it did not close the programme.
What remains
The Golden Visa continues through other routes, such as CMVM-regulated investment funds, job creation and support for cultural activities. The core benefits are unchanged: residency, freedom of movement in the Schengen Area, and a path toward permanent residence and citizenship.
Why the panic is overblown
Programmes like this evolve — routes, amounts and conditions are set by law and periodically revised. Treating every change as "the end" leads to two mistakes: rushing a poorly prepared application out of fear, or giving up on a route that is still open and suitable. Neither serves you well.
What to do about it
Instead of reacting to headlines, confirm the current framework for your case. The right question is not "is it ending?" but "which route is open and right for me today?" A diagnosis answers that — calmly and accurately.
