If you have heard of the Golden Visa but aren't quite sure what it is, this guide explains the essentials simply: what it is, how it works and where to start.
What it is
The Golden Visa is the popular name for Portugal's Residence Permit for Investment (ARI). In exchange for an eligible investment in the country, the investor and their family gain the right to reside in Portugal, move within the Schengen Area and, over the years, progress toward permanent residence and citizenship.
How it works, step by step
- Diagnosis. You define the goal (reside, plan B, European access or citizenship) and the most suitable route.
- Documentation. You gather and legalise the documents, including proof of the origin of funds.
- Investment. You make the eligible investment — for example, in CMVM-regulated funds.
- Application. You submit the application to AIMA (which replaced the SEF) and follow it through to the permit.
- Renewals. You keep the investment and the minimal presence, renewing residence toward permanence and nationality.
Which routes exist today
Since 2023, real estate is no longer eligible. Current routes include investment funds, job creation and support for cultural activities. The minimum amount depends on the route and is set by law, which may change — we always confirm what is in force.
Where to start
The first step is always a diagnosis of your profile and goals. From there, the route and plan are defined. An initial conversation, with no commitment, is the starting point.
